Martin Mulholland's latest EP which was recorded some months ago. It contains 7 tracks which have been the staple songs at his gigs when playing originals, in various venues, in Sydney. These songs were originally just acoustic and vocal songs which have been transformed into full band numbers with the help of his good friend and very talented drummer, Luke Davison.

Marching to a different...YEP! ....drum.
I have to admit it and it was no doubt obvious, at the time, the part of the annual schools athletics carnivals that I found least appealling was the marching competition, held at the beginning. My theory was that, after World War 2, many teachers had been soldiers and saw merit in instilling discipline through lots of standing at ease and at attention and marching in perfect step.
I was always more for marching to a different drum and taking the road less travelled. :) :(

Sundays were too far away, that year. But out of that situation grew one of the best friendships that I have had for 37 years and still going strong, namely, with the principal of the school, in town, (51 kms away) and his family.

The first time I did Alice.
 The first time I got the children to sing songs loosely based on the story of Alice in Wonderland, was in Bourke, in 1968. A few years later, did it again, in Mascot.
The production may not have been as great as those shows that my own children performed in many years later in their primary school, but it was a lot of fun. (You wouldn't know it from this picture :) , but then, it WAS hot there! ) And there was more 'show-business', in Milperra, in 1987.  At every school that was involved in the Department's soccer competition I loved coaching the school teams. So much so at this school that I entered teams in the weekend competition. Really loved running around at lunchtime, kicking the ball, with the kids. At this school at certain times the grass behind the school was very, very high. The weather hot and the perspiration coming off in buckets. Luckily, after lunch, there was a Silent Reading period. A good time to cool down. :)
This may have been the second year that the pupils and I painted a back-drop, for Speech or Presentation Night, held at the end of the school year. This was in my third year of teaching (judging by the children in the photo). Even though I knew a lot more about ballroom dances, at several schools, using a record on which the instructions were clearly called out, we did Square Dancing and often had the most fun, especially when at the beginning it would often be a mess and then later, when all the patterns of movement worked so well.

 During those 37 years of primary school teaching, mainly in Sydney, I loved all aspects of it but I guess that ex-pupils are going to remember the accordion, the dancing, the art and me taking lots of pictures, including, at one stage lots of 8mm movies.
In 1972, I went and told MY primary school teacher, back in the Netherlands, how much I had copied him in doing all these things.
I still have the newsletters he started off in the early 50s and the photo in which I was one of the minor characters in his Opereta. He invited me to come and look at the movies that HE took on school excursions, and we found me, very briefly, standing arms folded, not game to jump in, beside the pool with the artificial wave-making machine.
I have already set up an MSN-group to show ex-pupils photos that I took and I will avoid individual photos here.
Do email me, if you were an ex-pupil and I might have pictures of excursions, carnivals, open days, etc., etc., that you might like to see. Please save time by adding something to your message that makes it clear that you WERE a student at a school where I taught.

37 years at the chalkboard, in Sydney and elsewhere.
I have three web-logs going, in Dutch, telling people in the Netherlands, all about my life here, in Australia, but leaving out the biggest part, namely, 37 years as a 'chalky' in Sydney, Maude and Bourke.
I intend to use this MisterM-blog to 'Let off a bit of steam' about those 37 years in the classroom.
